Pelvic tumour resections
Pelvic tumour surgery is part of the service. Planning considers the diagnosis, extent of the tumour, treatment goals and the effect on everyday function.
How care is planned
The next step follows the diagnosis.
Not every tumour needs surgery. The aim of assessment is to understand what the finding represents and decide which treatment, observation or further investigation is appropriate.
Understand the concern
Discuss your symptoms, examine the affected area and review existing scans and treatment records.
Plan the investigations
Decide which imaging is needed and whether a planned biopsy would help establish the diagnosis.
Discuss the options
Bring together the imaging, sarcoma pathology review and relevant specialist input through multidisciplinary tumour discussion.
Plan beyond treatment
Discuss recovery, function and follow-up as part of your individual care plan.

Questions about tumour care
Does a tumour always mean cancer?
No. Tumours may be benign or malignant. The diagnosis, location and effect on surrounding tissues guide the next steps.
Can I arrange an assessment before a biopsy?
Yes. If a sarcoma is suspected, assessment before biopsy helps the diagnostic procedure fit the treatment plan. Bring any scans or reports you already have.
What if I already have a diagnosis or have had surgery?
You can request a treatment opinion. Bring your imaging, pathology report, operation notes and details of any previous cancer treatment. Ask how to arrange the review of pathology material if needed.
Are pelvic tumours included in the service?
Yes. The service includes assessment and resections of pelvic tumours. The suitability and extent of surgery, and any need for reconstruction, are considered individually.
How is care coordinated across specialties?
Aster MIMS Kannur has a regular multidisciplinary tumour board, sarcoma pathology review, medical oncology, a dedicated plastic and reconstructive surgery department, and rehabilitation. The input needed depends on the diagnosis and treatment plan.
Does every tumour need surgery or chemotherapy?
No. Observation or other treatment may be appropriate for some conditions. When cancer treatment is needed, the tumour type, extent and individual circumstances guide whether surgery, medicines or radiotherapy have a role.
