The current planned package range for ACL reconstruction is USD 1,500 to 2,500. The final written estimate depends on the graft, fixation, associated meniscus or cartilage treatment, medical assessment and planned admission.

First decide whether surgery is needed
An MRI-labelled ACL tear does not automatically require reconstruction. Recurrent giving way, pivoting sport, occupation, associated meniscus injury, examination and response to rehabilitation all influence the decision.
A remote review can organise the options. The final plan follows hands-on assessment. The MRI submission guide explains what to send. [1]
What the USD 1,500 to 2,500 range means
It is the present practice range for the planned hospital episode, not a universal India price. Your written hospital estimate should describe the treatment and inclusions that apply to you. It should name the expected operation and describe any assumption that could change after examination.
A revision ACL reconstruction, major multi-ligament injury or another complex procedure should not be forced into this primary ACL range. Those cases need their own work-up and estimate.
Price verification: the package range and standard scope were confirmed by Dr Vishnu Baburaj on 29 August 2026. Your written hospital estimate lists what applies to your treatment.
What the planned package includes
- Hospital room for the planned admission
- Routine consumables and disposables
- Inpatient medicines
- Planned consultations
- Inpatient physiotherapy
- Agreed graft fixation implants
- Operating theatre charges
- Surgeon and doctors' charges
- Anaesthesia charges
The final estimate should identify the proposed graft, fixation and any associated meniscus or cartilage procedure.
| Part of the planned operation | How it belongs in the estimate |
|---|---|
| Primary ACL reconstruction | Name the proposed graft and fixation within the USD 1,500 to 2,500 planning range. |
| Associated meniscus or cartilage treatment | State the likely procedure, any additional fixation or repair implants and whether this changes the price or planned admission. |
| Revision ACL or a major multi-ligament injury | Use a separate case-specific plan and estimate. |
Why two ACL estimates can differ
Graft harvest and fixation are not identical in every patient. A repairable meniscus tear may add implants and alter rehabilitation restrictions. Cartilage work can also change the procedure. Investigations, room choice and stay may affect the quote.
An examination may show that the plan needs to change. That possibility should be discussed before consent, with the financial effect recorded in writing.
Compare the fixation, not only the graft name
The graft has to be secured in prepared bone tunnels. Fixation methods vary with graft, technique and anatomy. Ask which implants are expected and whether they are included. A quote that says only “ACL implant” is difficult to compare.
Also check whether the surgery is primary or revision and whether earlier tunnels or hardware create additional work. The radiology and previous operation note help answer that question.
Graft choice belongs in the clinical discussion
Patellar tendon, hamstring and quadriceps tendon autografts have different harvest and donor-site considerations. The graft should be selected for the patient's anatomy, activity, kneeling needs, previous operations and surgeon experience. A lower quote is not better if it assumes a plan that has not been explained.
Young and active patients are generally advised to discuss autograft rather than treating allograft as a convenient default. The written estimate should match the agreed plan. [2]
What sits outside the standard package?
Plan the whole trip, including flights, visa, local accommodation, transport, companion support and rehabilitation at home. A flexible ticket is usually more practical than the least expensive fixed fare.
Travel, transfer and accommodation can be coordinated and incorporated into a custom package when requested. That arrangement should list each included service.
Calculate the complete treatment cost
Add local consultations and imaging before travel, visa where required, flights, a companion, accessible accommodation after discharge, transfers, meals and insurance. Then add rehabilitation, strength testing and any planned follow-up imaging after return.
Keep a contingency for a delayed flight review or a procedure that creates extra restrictions. The cheapest fixed ticket can be costly if it must be abandoned. Compare all quotes using the same recovery and home-therapy assumptions.
Budget for rehabilitation, not only surgery
ACL rehabilitation continues for months. Much of it takes place after the patient has returned home. A physiotherapist at home should be identified before travel, with access to the strength, movement and later sport testing the plan requires.
The discharge pack should state the graft, fixation, meniscus or cartilage work, weight-bearing status, brace instructions if any and progression limits. Without that handover, a lower operation price can lead to a fragmented recovery.
Who may find travel impractical?
A patient with an urgent locked knee, uncontrolled medical condition or no safe postoperative support may need local treatment first. Travel may also be a poor fit when the patient cannot remain for reassessment or has no physiotherapist to supervise the long rehabilitation.
Cost should not push an athlete into surgery during a poor biological or practical window. The knee may need prehabilitation, and work or study arrangements must allow several months of structured recovery.
Ask how an associated injury is handled
A meniscus tear may be repaired, trimmed or left alone depending on its pattern and tissue. A repair can require implants and different early restrictions. Cartilage damage may also alter the procedure. Ask whether the quote includes the likely additional work or describes how the amount would change. [2],[3]
| Budget group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Before travel | Local consultation, imaging, visa and medical optimisation |
| Hospital | Written ACL package and any agreed associated procedure |
| Local recovery | Extra accommodation, meals, companion and transfers |
| Return journey | Flexible fare, assistance and baggage |
| Home rehabilitation | Physiotherapy, strength testing and follow-up imaging |
Hospital discharge is not flight clearance
The usual admission is two days. For a flight longer than four hours, the first reassessment after uncomplicated isolated ACL reconstruction is generally planned at 7 to 14 days. This is the practice's review window; other arthroscopic operations can require a different plan. Meniscus repair, marked swelling, restricted weight bearing, medical risk or several connections can extend that stay.
Accommodation outside the hospital is not included in the standard admission-to-discharge package. Book somewhere that can be used safely with crutches and choose a return ticket that can move.

The trip-budget worksheet separates expected spending from a reserve. The handover sheet helps record the restrictions and rehabilitation plan.
What the treatment plan should explain
- Why is ACL reconstruction appropriate for this knee?
- Which graft and fixation are planned?
- How could meniscus or cartilage treatment change the operation and recovery?
- What medical preparation and discharge support are needed?
- How will rehabilitation and follow-up continue after return?
